Electronic Cigarette – Does it Have Potential Side Effects?
The electronic cigarette (e-cigarette), for some deemed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, has changed the tobacco industry in recent years. In e-cigarettes, tobacco combustion is substituted by e-juice heating, which some manufacturers claim leads to lesser respiratory effects than regular tobacco smoking. This is especially relevant in light of the recent reports of secondhand smoke, a dangerous by-product of cigarette smoking. E-cigarettes have also been criticized on health grounds because they lack the taste and the satisfaction one normally gets from smoking a normal cigarette.
Yet there are plenty of benefits to be gained from cigarettes
both from the health effects standpoint and the cost-cutting one might experience. E-cigarettes are generally less expensive than conventional cigarettes because of the reduced production costs. The reduced cost is primarily because no real production process is used. Less material is also used because they do not contain nicotine; therefore, the actual amount of nicotine present is not so high, thus fewer health effects can be encountered.
The health effects of cigarettes
are said to cause are mainly caused by nicotine, which is toxic when taken in great quantities. Thus any e-liquids are likely to have nicotine in them unless otherwise specified. Nicotine is known to be addictive and the more it is ingested, the harder it is to stop, leading to reliance on the substance on the part of smokers. This has led to the spike in recent e-cigarette related cases and illnesses, attributed to the fact that the nicotine levels in e-liquids have been drastically reduced. Also, e-liquids are of a lower strength than those found in cigarettes, which makes them highly unlikely to result in nicotine addiction.
However, there is controversy surrounding
the actual amount of nicotine present in e-liquids. A study carried out by the British Journal of Cancer showed that electronic cigarettes had about five times the amount of nicotine as cigarettes. In fact, even some experts agree that it is impossible to completely remove nicotine from cigarettes, as it would be an unfeasible feat. Instead of removing all nicotine, a safer solution would be to reduce the level of nicotine present in them, while still giving the smoker the feel of smoking. For this, the user may switch to an electronic liquid or patch, or switch to using a humidifier to distribute the moisture present in the air to the lungs, which lessens the sensation of smoke on the smoker’s body. By doing so, the user is less likely to experience any severe health consequences caused by smoking cigarettes.
Electronic Cigarette users
who also use electronic cigarettes in conjunction with regular smoking may experience some negative reactions from the combination. These include but are not limited to, dental problems, headaches, nausea, and chest pains. Since these are generally considered side effects from using e-cigs instead of regular tobacco cigarettes, many people who use them without accompanied by their usual tobacco cigarettes turn to the Internet and other sources of information to try and find out more about these side effects, to help them decide whether they should start using these products or not.
Some specialists claim
that it is not the e-liquids themselves that have the potential to cause such ailments but are instead caused by the chemicals contained within the tar and nicotine that are used to make up the traditional cigarettes. By mixing the tar and nicotine in the e-liquids, it is said that you are introducing potentially harmful chemicals into your system, which may have serious long-term consequences on your health. To avoid this problem, experts recommend that the user never mixes the tar and nicotine in any e-liquids that he uses, to prevent the introduction of chemicals into his body. This is the main reason why people who intend on starting on the path of electronic smoking cessation always prefer to use an e-juice with the nicotine-free formula, to ensure that they do not become victims of the potential side effects of e-cigs.
